Style and Look

Open-structure, minimalist instruments like Cecilio 4/4 CEVN-2BK silent violins are always arresting and spectacular to look at. In a striking colour scheme like this metallic black version, you will stand out, if that’s your wish. This is a handsome hand-carved, solid maple wood body. It is presented with ebony fingerboard, pegs, chin rest and a tailpiece containing mother of pearl inlay.

On stage, they catch the eye. When coupled with a good sound system, the on-board electronics push plenty of power through. They catch the ear as well. Standard electric musical instrument outputs allow you to plug into a range of amps and PAs. You can then take advantage of a range of after-market sound effect processors if you wish. As a violinist you can now “jam with your mates” at full volume!

Electronics

But many people choose a “silent” instrument because they can rehearse in peace and quiet without disturbing neighbours and family. Using a set of headphones, you can work your electric violin as hard as you like, and only you will hear it.

The CEVN-2BK fits into what you’d call the budget end of the spectrum, but you don’t get budget performance. It gives good quality sound when connected to good quality equipment. It is also supplied with a well-padded lightweight hard case, a bow, rosin, spare bridge, pickup, aux cable, headphones and a 9v battery. Supplied with strings already fitted, everything you need to get started comes in the case. It is only available in 4/4 size. Most users agree that the set of headphones supplied are poor quality, but the instrument uses standard connections, so you can use any headphones you like: from ear buds to full padded headband.

One other useful feature is the ability to feed sound in from another source. You can use this as backing track, click track or tutorial to play along with. Or you can choose to ignore it completely. You won’t be able to plug directly in to a computer, if that’s what you’re aiming for – you’ll need another interface/adaptor to make the link, depending on what you already have in place.

Sounds

But, how good does it sound? Remember you are at the budget end of the spectrum. Also remember, you don’t get the full bodied sound you would hear in a pure acoustic instrument. Don’t forget the true quality of what you hear will come from the amp and effects you are using. But the CEVN-2BK gives good value for money.

And how well does it play? You’ll probably find the action is a little high than you might expect. The weight is surprisingly a little more than a hollow-body acoustic.

Conclusions

It can also be seen as a good all-round starter package: from case to bow to strings to instrument. For a beginner, for “silent” practice at home or for public performance, this silent violin may be just what you’ve been looking for. However, you may need to factor in the cost of an amp if you’re looking at complete cost of ownership.
